When it comes to butt plug materials, any nonporous material is a safe bet. Glass/Pyrex, stainless steel, and silicone are all anal-safe nonporous materials that won’t harbor bacteria. Some hard plastics are nonporous, but most anal toys will be glass, steel, or silicone. It’s ideal to stick with one of these materials because they can be sanitized in boiling water if they’re non-motorized.

Spectrum Boutique makes anal toy shopping easy because we exclusively stock noporous anal toys, but it’s also good to know what materials to avoid. Elastomer/TPR/TPE, jelly, CyberSkin, stone, and most likely any mystery material you encounter, are porous materials that cannot be sanitized.

Beyond that, the specific material you pick will come down to personal preference! As long as it has a flared base or definite stopping point, it’s anal safe! Read more about our favorite nonporous anal toy materials!

Silicone Anal Plugs

Silicone is lightweight, nonporous, and can be made in a wide range of densities, textures and colors. It’s softer than other materials, but just as easy to clean. Some people prefer softer silicone because it can bend and compress inside the body, making the toy feel smaller than a firm material. However, others prefer firm silicone because it is easier to insert and great for g-spot or prostate stimulation.

Pyrex/Glass Anal Plugs

Glass anal plugs are smoother than silicone and lighter than stainless steel plugs. Glass holds onto hot and cold temperatures and is compatible with all lubricants! Hard anal toys are a great inexpensive and easy to clean option. All the glass sex toys we carry at Spectrum are made from borosilicate glass (think Pyrex) which is body-safe. Even longer and thinner glass anal dildos are tempered to withstand a lot of weight and pressure.

Stainless Steel Anal Plugs

Stainless steel anal plugs are smooth like Pyrex but heavier than both glass and silicone. Steel holds hot and cold temperatures best. Because it’s heavy, the weight of the plug pushes against the inside of the sphincter and creates delicious pressure. If a metal plug is incredibly inexpensive, it’s most likely not stainless steel but a different chrome-plated metal. Chrome is not body-safe and can tarnish, rust, or even chip.
